How Taylor Swift Saved a Daddy-Daughter Dance and Taught a DJ to Shake It Off
Before I was planning a destination wedding.
Before I was interviewing wedding DJs and asking questions about reading a room, adapting to the unexpected, and creating unforgettable moments.
Before I became the groom-to-be wondering who would hold the microphone and guide our guests onto the dance floor…
I was the guy behind the booth.
Another lifetime ago, I was an event DJ for A Amore’ Events & Entertainment, owned and operated by Mari and Chad. I wasn’t just spinning music for one type of event. I was contracted for birthdays, anniversaries, weddings, school events, and everything in between.
You know the phrase:
“I’m with the DJ!”
That was my world. I knew music. I knew equipment. I knew how to build energy.
Or at least, I thought I did …
The Preparation Before the Battle
One particular event was a Daddy-Daughter Dance. The night before, I was doing what every responsible DJ does:
- Overthinking
- Reviewing
- Preparing
- Agonizing over playlists (And yes, playlists plural)
I was thinking about every possible scenario:
- What songs would get the girls excited?
- What songs would make the dads comfortable?
- How do I get the first person onto the dance floor?
- How do I keep the energy moving?
- How do I avoid the dreaded empty dance floor?
Looking back now, I recognize that I was building systems and habits long before I knew the names James Clear or Charles Duhigg (Atomic Habits, The Power of Habit)
I had routines. I had checklists. I had preparation. I had confidence.
I also had no idea what the room was going to give me.
While preparing, I had Spotify playing in the background. I was listening for inspiration, for energy, for anything that might fit the moment.
And then I heard it: The latest and greatest Taylor Swift drop.
“Shake It Off.”
At the time, it was climbing the charts. Catchy song. Big energy. I downloaded the DRM-free track, added it to my playlist, and even wrote the name down because…
Well… I’m not a Swiftie. (Still not.) But I knew enough to recognize a popular song when I heard one.
Little did I know that song was about to save my night.
The Dance Floor Disaster
Event day arrived, so load-in was easy. The setup was completed smoothly. I texted Mari my setup confirmation because professionalism matters and I’m obligated to do so. I wanted proof I was there, ready, and on schedule.
The event started. I hit play. And then…
Nothing.
Crickets.
The dance floor was empty. The daughters were not dancing. The dads were standing around talking about lawn care, and in New Balance shoes like Father of the Bride (1991)
The music was playing, but the moment was not happening. And somewhere across the room was the principal of the school.
Giving me the look. You know the look!
The:
“I should have hired the other company.”
look.
My confidence started slipping. So I went to the obvious choices: Disney. (Surely Disney would work!)
I queued up: “Let It Go” from Frozen.
Nothing.
I tried Selena Gomez.
Nothing!
Hilary Duff.
Nothing.
Katy Perry.
Nothing.
At this point, I was digging deeper into the musical toolbox. Heck… I even pulled out Ariana Grande.
Still nothing. The songs were good. The songs were appropriate. The songs were popular. But the dance floor remained empty.
A Little Help From Above
Eventually, I stepped back. Closed my eyes. Took a deep breath.
And quietly said:
“Mom, a little help down here for your son would be most helpful.”
I opened my eyes. And my attention went back to the playlist.
There it was … “Shake It Off” by Taylor Swift. I stared at it.
Seriously? That song?
I mentally shrugged. “FAWK IT.” Nothing else is working. Might as well.
With my mouse, I dragged the song to Deck A. Pressed play.
The Swift Intervention
Instantly, the dance floor exploded. And not slowly. Not gradually, y’all.
Instantly. Girls came running. They grabbed their dads. They grabbed their father figures. They pulled them onto the dance floor.
And suddenly the room transformed. The girls knew the song. They knew the lyrics. They knew the moves.
It wasn’t just music. It was participation. They weren’t waiting for a DJ to entertain them. They were waiting for a song that gave them permission to have fun!
They sang. They laughed. They danced. They giggled. And their dads followed along.
The dance floor that had been empty moments earlier became the memory everyone came to create. I stood there behind the booth shaking my head.
Because the funniest part? I went back to the top of my playlist. The very songs I had carefully selected. The songs the girls ignored. The songs that should have worked.
And there was Taylor Swift: my unlikely hero.
Thank You, Tay Swift
A moment later, I looked upward. I kissed my ring finger. Raised it toward the ceiling.
And said:
“Here’s to you, Tay Swift. Wherever you are, whatever you’re doing, I sincerely thank you.”
Because that night taught me something important. The best DJs do not force the moment. They find it. They listen. They “keep digging“, per se.
They understand that the audience always has the final vote. The crowd doesn’t care about your perfectly organized playlist. They don’t care about your musical expertise.
They care about how the music makes them feel. And sometimes the song that saves the night is the one you almost skipped.
The Lesson I Carry Forward
Years later, I find myself preparing for another big event. My own wedding.
Jennifer and I are planning our destination wedding, and naturally, we are interviewing wedding DJs.
Now I know exactly what I’m looking for. Not someone who simply presses play. Not someone who only follows a predetermined list.
I’m looking for someone who can read a room. Someone who understands that weddings are living, breathing experiences. Someone who can recognize when the plan needs to change.
Because I learned that lesson behind a DJ booth at a Daddy-Daughter Dance. I walked into that event believing my job was to teach people how to dance.
Instead, Taylor Swift taught me how to listen. And yes… Shake It Off.
