Caches And Apps And Treasure, Oh My!

On January 14, 2025 – Geocaching HQ made an early year announcement. Treasures will be a new feature on Geocaching.com and the mobile app!

Geocaching is often called the world’s largest treasure hunt. As we kick off the 25th year of geocaching, we’re excited to announce a new feature called Treasures!

The digital Treasures feature builds on previous limited-time campaigns you might remember, like the clues from Mystery at the Museum, the passport stamps from Wonders of the World, and the magic items in Signal’s Labyrinth. In those cases, digital treasures were temporary and disappeared when the promotion ended.

Starting in March 2025, digital Treasures will be a collectible game feature. Geocachers can collect these digital items by finding and logging caches that meet specific criteria set by HQ for each Treasure collection.

As the release date approaches, we’ll provide more details about how the feature works, where to find treasures, and how to share feedback. Stay tuned to the blog and newsletter for the latest updates—we can’t wait to share them with you!

Mystery at the Museum

Mystery at the Museum was one of the first, if not the first, limited time promotions offered by Geocaching HQ within the app. I loved it!

Authorities need your help solving the biggest jewel heist in history, the Mystery at the Museum! From July 11 to August 11, get briefed on the case and find clues to track down the stolen jewels. Once you have found the jewels, return them to the vault using the hidden code changed by the thieves.

Clues are digital artifacts hidden in geocaches. Clues help you solve the Mystery at the Museum. Search for geocaches that contain the clues you are looking for and collect the clue when you log the cache beginning July 11 at noon UTC.

Geocaching HQ FAQ

My sister, WCP24, and I had a blast finding clues, and solving easy mysteries!

Treasure Hunting

My Godson is 4 years old. So the simplest explanations are best to communicate with him. To date, he still loves dinosaurs, and monster trucks. He watches Paw Patrol, and other educational programs picked out by Mom.

Mom has explained to him that “Uncle Los” goes treasure hunting as often as he can. And when I can, I exchange items out of geocaches to mail to my Godson in this order of preference: dinosaurs, monster trucks, etc. Most recently, I mailed him a miniature garbage truck like his Dad’s. He was thrilled.

Even I find myself to easily explain the game with inquisitive strangers as, “the GPS based global treasure hunting game“.

Traditionally SWAG stands for Stuff We All Get, a.k.a. promotional products for marketing and giveaways, but swag (derived from swagger) also means cool, composed, and “with it.” Swag can be used as both a noun or a verb and continues to evolve in popular culture.

Not much more is known about the Treasures feature of Geocaching, but I’m amped to find out in March!
