Welcome, reader! It is I, los with the most. I am the asphalt asskicker, purveyor of pavement, kaiser of concrete, the car czar, the Lyftkeeper, to relay Tales from the Lyft!
The following has been plucked from the backseat of the Millennium Subaru. The only detail(s) changed are the names of the people.
Sit back, chillax, and read with delight.
I’ve been driving for Lyft since May 2023. It’s the perfect side hustle for me! I love the driving experience, I listen to my tunes, learn the streets of the Phoenix metroplex, converse with riders, all while being paid to do it!
Ride #83 – Moriah’s Cupcakes
I’ll preface these stories with most shifts are run-of-the-mill, garden-variety, basic drives. My Lyft driver app settings are to Auto Accept Ride Requests. This is my side hustle so I have no desire to decline rides.
This particular ride had a stop in-between the pick up point and drop off place; nothing unusual about that. I picked up the mother of Moriah, who is a first time rider. Apparently, her daughter arranged this, and we were picking her up along the way at a bakery.
We rolled up to A Bakeshop with “Hey, Sugar!” on the front window. Moriah pops out with a tell-tale brown box containing her chosen cupcakes for Mommy-Daughter Day. I dropped them off in west Phoenix with no issue.
[Later on …]
My last drive of the day was to a BMW dealership. For safety reasons, Lyft suppresses in-app messages between driver and riders. I received a message from Moriah that she left her cupcakes in the backseat. A different rider alerted me to this, so I placed in the back for safe keeping.
Lyft advised I’ll receive a $20 reward for returning the item. I was already en route to PopStroke with no detours planned. I contacted Moriah to advise I’ll drop them off tomorrow.
[The next day …]
I researched the Lost and Found procedures for Lyft. Lyft charges the rider $20 for any returned item regardless of the cost of the item or distance to travel. WHAT! The “reward” is a fee paid by the rider.
The cupcakes in my possession were lovely but not worth an additional 20 USD for their recovery. I wanted to start my day with a “good turn”, so I drove it out to Moriah which was the opposite direction of my errands.

I text Moriah my arrival, handed them over, and advised, “Don’t say anything to Lyft. They’ll charge you an additional 20 dollars for the returned item. I will not say anything either.”
She smiled as she shook my outstretched hand, ” Wow. That’s the nicest thing someone has done for me in awhile.”
“You’re welcome, ” I replied, “Pay it forward when given that opportunity. Ok?”
“I’ll be sure to do that,” she answered.
I smirked, “Besides, it was the right thing to do, because cupcakes were at stake!” I laughed, and drove away.
‘los; out.
