Austin Powers “Yeah, Baby!” Sound Box
Given by Chris McClain Simmons, Winter 2002

This little blue box once sat buried under papers in a chaotic cubicle belonging to Chris McClain Simmons—a loud, proud, rule-breaking force of nature at Costco Travel. Our departments sparred in good fun, but McClain took particular joy in hazing me. Sharp wit, movie trivia with an edge, and pointed jabs. For a while, I wasn’t sure he liked me at all.
Then, near the end of his time at Costco—and his life—he called me over and asked, “Hey Los, do you like me?” I said, “Of course. Why would you need to ask?” That’s when he handed me this gift: a small plastic sound box featuring Austin Powers. “Press it,” he said.
“Yeah, baby, yeah!” rang out.
He grinned. “Anytime you miss me, press that button. Just like I press your buttons!”
Chris McClain Simmons passed away shortly after. I later learned he didn’t connect with many others at work like he did with me. This odd, wonderful little box reminds me: some people express affection in the most unexpected ways—and sometimes, hazing is love in disguise.
